The Most Popular Dog Names of 2026: Is Your Dog's Name Among Them?

Choosing a name for your dog is one of the first big decisions we make as dog owners. The name has to be lovely, practical, short enough to call out on a walk and, of course, one that somehow “suits” the dog.

Some choose a name based on looks, others on character, others still on a favourite film character, a colour, nature or a moment of inspiration.

Since we were curious which names come up most often among our canine friends, we looked into the Gina’s Woofs birthday database and put together a list of the most popular dog names of 2026.

Two names are at the top: Sky and Luna.

Top 8 dog names of 2026

Sky: is one of the most popular names in our Gina’s Woofs community. Short, modern and very catchy. It means the sky, so it carries a feeling of freedom, lightness and adventure.

Sky is a name that suits dogs with a gentle, slightly dreamy energy, as well as more active ones who love exploring the world around them. We often picture it on pups with blue eyes, a merle coat, or those with something special about them.

Luna: has been a real classic among dog names for some time. Luna is a name that suits girls with a soft character and big eyes. But don't let the gentle name fool you. Many a Luna can also be a real little boss.

Bella: means “beautiful” and is one of those names that never really goes out of fashion. It is soft, elegant and very pleasant to say. Bella suits pups with a bit of a princess vibe, who love to pose and know they're cute.

Oli: is a short, sweet and very friendly name. It has a relaxed, warm feel, so we quickly associate it with a pup who is sociable, playful and always somewhere close to their people. Oli is a name that suits dogs who love to cooperate, get excited quickly and brighten the day with their energy.

Nala: became very popular thanks in part to The Lion King. It sounds gentle, warm and a little regal, so it's no surprise owners often choose it for girls with a strong but kind character.

Thor: is perfect for pups with a strong presence. It is linked to the Norse god of thunder, so the name has a feeling of strength, courage and energy. But in the dog world, Thor can often be the biggest cuddle monster in the house. The name sounds mighty, but it can just as well belong to a dog who is afraid of the vacuum cleaner, loves blankets and still thinks he's a little puppy.

Ruby: means “ruby”, the precious red gemstone. It sounds warm, lively and a little elegant. Ruby is a name that suits girls with sparkling energy, a warm character or that special shine in their eyes. It is gentle, but not too calm.

Gina: has a special place with us too. It is short, soft and homely, yet elegant enough never to sound boring. Gina is a name for a girl with a gentle, loyal and warm character. The kind that quickly settles into your heart and stays there.
