Dog Names We Hear Less Often Today
We checked the dog names we hear less often today. They include Tačka, Biba, Ajša, Šila and Snežka. Does your dog have a rarer name?
Dog names have their trends too. Some names are everywhere for a few years, and then slowly give way to new ones. Sometimes classic names are more popular, sometimes short modern names, and sometimes names that sound almost human.
We took a peek into the Gina's Woofs name library and went through the data, because we wanted to know which dog names we hear less often today.
Names we hear less often in our database
When going through the Gina’s Woofs birthday database, we noticed a few names that appear rarely or are found mainly among older dogs.
These are:
- Tačka
- Tisa
- Missy
- Biba
- Ajša
- Mini
- Lux
- Beti
- Stu
- Šila
- Snežka
Of course, this doesn't mean these names are no longer lovely or that nobody chooses them anymore. Quite the opposite - names like these often have the most character. We just hear them less often than the names currently at the top of the chart.
From Tačka to Sky: what has changed?
One interesting difference is that older dog names were often more descriptive, affectionate or homely. The name Tačka (“Paw”), for example, is very doggy, cute and straightforward. You immediately picture a pup with a soft gaze and that one white paw that made the name come about all by itself.
The name Biba has a gentle, homely feel. It is short, sweet and a little nostalgic.
The name Snežka (“Snowy”) has a charm all of its own. Today, many owners might choose Snow, Bela or Luna instead.
On the other hand, names like Sky, Blue, Ruby and Nala are more modern, visual and “Instagrammable”. They sound lovely, look good written down and quickly get their own aesthetic.
Why do we choose different dog names today?
Dogs are even more a part of the family today than ever before. They come with us on trips, holidays, to cafés, to work and, of course, onto social media.
So it's no surprise that when choosing a name, owners often think about how it sounds, how it looks written down and what story it carries.
A name is no longer just something you call your dog by on a walk. It becomes part of their personality.
That is why names that are very popular today are:
- short,
- catchy,
- easy to call,
- modern,
- visually appealing,
- connected to nature, colours or the dog's character.
Rarer names have a special charm
Although trends are interesting, rarer dog names have something that popular names often lack: uniqueness.
If you call “Luna” on a walk, three dogs may turn around. If you call “Snežka”, “Tačka” or “Biba”, there is a much better chance that only yours will.
Rarer names also often carry a more personal story. Maybe the name is linked to the dog's looks, their character, a family joke or the moment you first met.
And that is exactly what makes them special.
Have classic dog names really disappeared?
Not quite.
It would be more accurate to say they have just stepped out of the spotlight a little. Some names still appear, they are just no longer among the most common.
As with human names, trends in dog names can come back. Maybe in a few years we'll see more Tačkas, Bibas, Ajšas and Snežkas again.
And honestly? That would be rather nice.
How to choose a name that won't go out of fashion?
The best dog name is not necessarily the one that is most popular right now. The best name is the one that suits your dog.
If you want a name that will still be lovely in ten years, choose something you truly like, not just something that is trending right now.
A good dog name is usually:
- short enough to call out,
- clear and easy to pronounce,
- different from basic commands,
- connected to your dog's character or looks,
- and one that still makes you smile when you say it.
